  • 1992-2008 - I refer to these years as the Saltspring Island saga.
I purchased 40 acres on Bullock Lake, Saltspring Island, BC. Zoning of the project took years and was approved and development began for 123 cottages, a world class lodge, pool house, spa and conference center. By 2007, sales began and we sold out the first phase of 50 cottages in 2008. What happened next is best told in a TV mini-series as most wouldn’t believe it. A fire burned down the conference center, pool house and adjacent buildings. The primary lender, Gibratlar Mortgage promised to rebuild and had a court order to do so. They foreclosed on the project after receiving the insurance funds (over $9 million), but worse, they had no intention of paying their syndicated lenders (now over $24 million). I stayed in court to fight to save the project and the investors. All purchase deposits were returned to the buyers. Unfortunately a fire destroyed the main lodge and nearby buildings and due to zoning the sales could not be completed without the lodge in place.
